Tilling Your Soil

“A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root; they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.” Matthew 13:3-9

One night I was awaken out of a sound sleep. I received this word from my Lord and Savior:

“Stop looking at others. Be mindful of the type of ground and soil you are; what seeds is your soil producing?"

There are four types of ground and soil:

Hard Ground: no soil; birds ate the seeds.

Hardened Soil: desensitized; less sympathetic

Result: We hear God’s Word and do not understand. Satan comes and takes away what is in our heart.

Rocky Ground: not much soil; no root.

Shallow Soil: superficial; do not have/show any depth or character or understanding.

Result: We hear God’s Word, receive it with joy – but it does not take root. We keep God’s Word until we run into trouble because of our belief, and then we turn away. We fall by the wayside.

Thorny Ground: thorns grow and choke the seed.

Contaminated Soil: made impure by exposure.

Result: We hear God’s Word, but the secular world and all it’s trappings choke off God’s Word and it is unfruitful, producing worry, fear, anxiety, doubt.

Good Ground: good soil; produces hundredfold, sixty-fold, thirty-fold.

Receptive Soil: able and willing to receive

Result: We hear God’s Word. We understand God’s Word. We begin to produce the fruit of the spirit – love, faithfulness, peace, joy, gentleness, goodness, kindness, patience, self-control

Before we drop seeds on others – we must be mindful and constantly tilling our soil. Able and willing to not only receive God’s Word but be obedient to His instruction.

Are you on good ground? Is your ground thorny? What type of soil are you? Are you contaminated and unfruitful? Are you producing seeds of hate, fear, despair? Or are you producing seeds of love, faith, hope?

God’s Word, Prayer and Worship are the methods we use for tillage. We must dig into God’s Word. Stir our faith with Prayer. Overturn the enemy with Worship.

Declaration: Declare today, I am standing on good ground. My soil is receptive. I am producing the Fruit of the Spirit.

Action: Study the Parable of the Sower – Matthew 13:3-9

Prayer: Lord, thank You for teaching me through Your parable. Help me to stand on good ground and till my soil. Guide me in producing fruit of the spirit. Open my ears to hear Your Word. Free my mind to understand Your Word. Touch my heart to share Your Word. Anoint my life to live Your Word. In Jesus Name. Amen
